Digital Marketing for Auto Garages: The Practical Guide

A detailed Google Business Profile, SMS maintenance reminders and customer reviews: three simple levers that help an independent garage stand out from dealerships. A practical guide with CHF-based examples and a 30-day action plan.

By Nuredin Mohamed Ali

In 2026, more than eight out of ten drivers start their search for a garage on Google. They type "oil change garage Geneva", "tyre change Lausanne" or "car air conditioning near me", compare three or four results in under two minutes, then call. If your garage does not appear at that precise moment — or shows up with an empty profile and three reviews — the customer goes to the dealership across the street: often more expensive, but more visible.

The good news: an independent garage in French-speaking Switzerland can stand out from dealerships with simple tools and a modest budget. This practical guide focuses on three concrete levers: a Google Business Profile with detailed services, maintenance reminders by SMS and email, and a review and workshop photo strategy that builds trust.

Why an independent garage can beat a dealership online

Dealerships have large marketing budgets, but they suffer from three weaknesses you can exploit:

  • Their prices: a service invoiced at 650 CHF by a dealership often costs between 350 and 450 CHF at an independent garage. But the customer needs to know that before calling.
  • Their coldness: dealership reviews often mention waiting times, a lack of follow-up and the feeling of being just a number. A neighbourhood garage can showcase a direct relationship with the owner.
  • Their local inertia: the dealership targets the whole canton; you can dominate your town and the surrounding neighbourhoods on Google, exactly where your customers actually are.

Digital marketing for a garage is therefore not about imitating dealerships, but about making your natural advantages visible: proximity, price and trust.

Your Google Business Profile: your garage's main shop window

The Google Business Profile is the most profitable tool in your marketing: it is free and captures high-intent local searches such as "garage open Saturday" or "winter tyre fitting". A complete profile can generate 30 to 50 additional calls per month for a well-located garage.

Detail your services, one by one

Most garages fill in their profile in ten minutes: name, address, opening hours. That is a mistake. Google lets you add detailed services with descriptions and prices, and this is where everything happens. Create one entry per service:

  • Oil change and full service — from 189 CHF
  • Tyre fitting and balancing — from 25 CHF per wheel
  • Air conditioning recharge and maintenance — from 120 CHF
  • Brake pads and discs — from 280 CHF
  • Preparation for the cantonal vehicle inspection — from 150 CHF
  • Electronic diagnostics — from 90 CHF

Each detailed service increases your chances of appearing for the corresponding search. A customer looking for "car AC recharge" will see your service and its price directly, without going through a dealership that displays nothing. Add a two- to three-sentence description per service, with the brands you work on and the usual turnaround time.

Workshop photos that build trust

Profiles with more than 100 photos receive significantly more calls and direction requests than nearly empty ones. For a garage, photos play a precise role: reassuring a customer who is entrusting a vehicle worth 20,000 to 60,000 CHF to a stranger. Publish:

  • a clean, tidy workshop with lifts and tools visible;
  • the team at work, in uniform, faces visible;
  • before/after interventions (brakes, tyres, bodywork);
  • the reception area and waiting room;
  • the façade and car park, so customers recognise the premises.

Add two to three photos per week. Consistency matters more than studio quality: a well-framed smartphone photo of a repair is worth more than an annual photo shoot.

Customer reviews: your strongest argument against dealerships

For an equivalent service, a garage rated 4.8 stars with 120 reviews will almost always win against a dealership at 3.9 stars with 60 reviews. Reviews are your most powerful lever, and they can be worked on:

  1. Ask systematically: when handing back the keys, simply say "if you are happy, a Google review helps us enormously". Then send the direct link by SMS the same evening.
  2. Aim for consistency: two to four new reviews per week carry more weight than forty reviews at once, which Google may consider suspicious.
  3. Reply to everything: every review, positive or negative, deserves a reply within 24 to 48 hours. A calm, factual reply to a negative review reassures future customers more than ten five-star reviews.

SMS and email maintenance reminders: the revenue you are leaving on the table

This is the most under-exploited lever in the industry. Your customer file contains hundreds of number plates, service dates and mileage readings — and it is worthless if it stays in a binder or an invoicing tool.

Let us run the numbers for an average garage in French-speaking Switzerland:

  • 800 active customers on file;
  • average service basket: 420 CHF;
  • without reminders, around 55% of customers come back within the year; the others forget, postpone or go elsewhere;
  • with well-timed SMS and email reminders, this rate easily climbs to 70%.

Fifteen retention points across 800 customers means 120 additional services, roughly 50,000 CHF in annual revenue — for a sending cost of a few cents per SMS. No advertising campaign offers that kind of return.

How to structure your reminders

  1. Annual service reminder: an SMS 11 months after the last intervention. "Hello Mr Favre, your Golf's service is due. Reply YES and we will offer you a slot."
  2. Seasonal tyre reminders: two campaigns per year, in late September and late March, with online booking. These are your two revenue peaks: smooth them out by opening bookings early.
  3. Inspection reminder: if you record cantonal inspection dates, a reminder two months ahead turns an administrative obligation into a billable preparation service.
  4. Post-service follow-up email: on day three, a quality-check message that also invites the customer to leave a Google review. Two goals in a single send.

These scenarios are set up once and then run on their own. This is exactly the kind of system we install through our automation and AI service for SMEs: connection to your existing software, reminder scenarios and automatic replies to booking requests.

A simple website that turns visits into appointments

A garage website does not need to be spectacular. It must answer the visitor's three questions within ten seconds: what do you do, at what price, and how to book. In practice:

  • one page per main service, with "from CHF" prices and turnaround times;
  • a call button and a WhatsApp button permanently visible on mobile;
  • an online booking module, even a basic one;
  • your Google reviews displayed on the homepage;
  • photos of your team, not American stock images.

An effective showcase site for a garage can be built from 1,500 to 3,000 CHF. If yours is more than five years old or does not display properly on mobile, a redesign through our website creation service in Geneva pays for itself with a few extra appointments per month.

A 30-day action plan

  1. Week 1: complete your Google Business Profile — every service with prices, 20 workshop photos, exact opening hours and a booking link.
  2. Week 2: put the systematic review request in place (a sentence at key handover, then an SMS with the direct link the same evening).
  3. Week 3: export your customer file and launch your first reminder: every customer whose last service dates back more than 11 months.
  4. Week 4: prepare the tyre campaign for the coming season and publish your first three before/after photos.

Within a month, without spending a single franc on advertising, your garage will be more visible than most of its competitors — dealerships included. Paid levers (local Google Ads, Meta campaigns) come next, built on solid foundations.
