Google Search Console is the most underused free tool among Swiss SMEs. It shows you exactly how Google sees your website: the queries that bring you visitors, the pages that appear in search results, and the errors that silently cost you clients. Yet most businesses have either never opened it or set it up once and forgot about it.
This guide is written for the complete beginner. In under an hour, you will know how to set up the tool, read the five reports that actually matter, and apply a simple method to find high-potential queries. No technical skills required.
Why Google Search Console Is Essential
Google Analytics tells you what visitors do on your site. Google Search Console tells you what happens before that: inside the search results. It is the only reliable source to know:
- which keywords your site actually appears for on Google;
- how many people see your pages and how many click;
- which pages are indexed, and which ones are being ignored;
- whether Google is running into technical errors on your site.
For a Swiss SME investing in organic search, working without Search Console means flying blind. The tool is free, official and reliable: there is no reason to go without it.
Set It Up in 15 Minutes
Step 1: Create the property
Go to the Search Console homepage with a Google account and click Add property. Choose the Domain type: it covers every version of your site (http, https, with and without www). It is the recommended choice for a clean start.
Step 2: Verify ownership
Google asks for proof that you own the site. For a Domain property, this is done through a DNS record: you copy a code provided by Google and paste it into your hosting provider's DNS zone (Infomaniak, Hostinger, Hostpoint, and so on). If that step feels intimidating, two simple alternatives exist:
- Through your host: most Swiss hosting providers offer a one-click shortcut to add the record;
- Through the URL prefix type: you can verify with an HTML tag or your existing Analytics account, without touching DNS.
Step 3: Submit your sitemap
The sitemap is the map of your website. On WordPress, it is generated automatically by the usual SEO plugins and typically lives at yoursite.ch/sitemap.xml. In Search Console, open the Sitemaps menu, paste the address and submit. Google will then know which pages to crawl first.
The 5 Key Reports to Read Every Month
1. The Performance report
This is the heart of the tool. It shows four metrics: impressions (how often your pages appear on Google), clicks, CTR (click-through rate) and average position. Enable all four boxes above the chart to see everything at once. Below it, the Queries tab lists the exact searches your visitors typed: a goldmine for your content strategy.
2. Page indexing
This report shows how many pages are indexed and why some are not. Reasons such as "Discovered, currently not indexed" or "Crawled, currently not indexed" are common and not always serious. A strategic page missing from the index, however, is a problem to fix immediately.
3. Core Web Vitals
This report measures the speed and stability of your pages on mobile and desktop. Slow pages hurt your rankings and drive visitors away. If the report flags URLs as "needs improvement" or "poor", pass the details to your developer or your agency.
4. The Links report
It lists the websites linking to yours and your most-cited pages. External links remain one of the pillars of SEO: this report gives you for free what paid tools charge a premium for.
5. Security and manual actions
The report you always want to find empty. If Google detects a hack or a practice that violates its guidelines, the alert appears here. Check it once a month: an unresolved manual action can wipe your site from the results.

The Method to Find High-Potential Queries
Here is the most profitable technique in Search Console, doable in 20 minutes:
- Open the Performance report and set the period to the last 3 months.
- Sort the Queries tab by impressions, descending.
- Spot the queries with many impressions, few clicks and an average position between 5 and 20: these are your hidden gems. Google already considers you relevant, just not enough for page one or the top spots.
- For each gem, open the corresponding page and strengthen it: work the query into the title and subheadings, add a paragraph that answers the question precisely, and enrich it with concrete examples.
- Come back a month later and measure the change in average position.
This simple loop, repeated every month, produces measurable results without writing a single extra article. You improve what already exists, exactly where the data proves the potential.
Common Errors and How to Fix Them
- Strategic page not indexed: use the URL inspection tool (the magnifying glass at the top), review the diagnosis, then click "Request indexing".
- 404 error on a deleted page: set up a 301 redirect to the closest matching page to preserve traffic and links.
- Forgotten noindex tag: common after a redesign, when the "discourage search engines" setting stays ticked. Untick it, then request reindexing.
- Sitemap not found: check the exact address in your SEO plugin and resubmit it in the Sitemaps menu.
- Sudden drop in clicks: compare two periods in the Performance report to identify which queries and pages dropped before assuming a penalty.
Your 30-Minute Monthly Routine
There is no need to open Search Console every day. A monthly routine is enough for an SME website:
- 10 minutes on the Performance report: click trends, new queries, gems to strengthen;
- 10 minutes on indexing: new errors, important pages missing;
- 5 minutes on Core Web Vitals and the Links report;
- 5 minutes to check security and note next month's actions.
After six months of this discipline, you will know more about your visibility than most of your competitors, and every content decision will rest on real data instead of gut feeling.
